I love red wine, but don't know what to buy in the supermarket. Which Italian red wines are the best?

The best Italian Reds are from Piedmont , Veneto, and Tuscany. Just to mention a few: 1. Amarone dell Valpolicella 2. Barolo 3. Brunello di Montalcino

Our local vineyard is fairly good. We usually go with an empty 5 litre bottle and get them to fill it with their best red. Its very very cheap and a great everyday wine. I assume that this is common practice throughout Italy.

For something a little different try the DOCG designated wine TAURASI, made with Aglianico grapes from Campania. The South of Italy (“Mezzogiorno”) is one of the most exciting wine areas in the world. Of all the regions that make up South Italy, Campania is producing some of the most exciting wines particularly the Campania sub region, Irpinia. This is the place that is now producing wines to compare and compete with the best in the world. It’s being achieved primarily with local grape varieties such as Aglianico, Greco and Fiano, instead of Cabernet, Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. Depending on where you are, however, it may be difficult to find. Definately not in your supermarket!

Divertiti!

Thank you for your comments! My wife usually buys Chianti from our local supermarket but it can be dreadful! I wen to our local Oddbins and asked what they suggested - Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino, but it's so expensive! Hoe can you possibly justify £20+ for a bottle of wine? I like the idea of taking a 5 litre flask to my local shop for wine and have it filled cheaply, though I live in Dorset and the only stuff you can get here is cider.

Have you heard of Laithwaites? They are an internet based wine merchants with good quality wines at reasonable prices. They have a good rang of Italian wines.

I hadn't heard of them, no, but I'll check them out. I went to Waitrose yesterday and bought a bottle of Montepuliciano d'Abruzzo and it was delicious - and it cost less than £5!!!! I'll be back for more. Do post here if other readers come across good red wines for under a fiver.

I second the Amarone di Valpolicella, its an amazing wine. I also love a good Rosso di Montalcino, Morellino di Scansano and Villa Antinori from Chianti, When I lived in the UK I used to drink a lot of Valpolicella, good value and soft and fruity. Hope this helps :-)

I bought a bottle of Amarone last night and agree - it is excellent, though expensive at almost £15. I had to lie to my wife about how much I'd spent - otherwise she would have gone ballistic. She loved it too and asked me to buy some more and now I'm in a quandry!

Life is too short to drink bad wine! Go for it and don't tell her!!

SallyinSardinia - 24/04/2008 16:25

Don't know if its widely available in the UK, but red wine from the Cannonau grape variety in Sardinia may be worth investigating. I think that Sella & Mosca may supply. I highly recommend it, and also my friends and family who have visited have been very impressed.

My husband likes to drink cheap good quality wines with his meals in the week, and has found a wine at Asda which is smooth very easy drinking, it is medium bodied red wine. 'Seven Hills' and costs £5.27 1.5litre bottle, it can be bought by the bottle as well, but not sure what the cost is. Highly recommended 'Vino da Tavola'.

So many good tips! I always try to keep a note of recommendations like these, but tend to write them down and then lose the list by the time I am at the supermarket. In the same way. I tend to forget the good wines I've tried and don't record what they are before I recycle the bottles. I need to set up a more organised system!
