We live and work here in Basilicata. We moved to Italy early in 2007 to develop our alpaca breeding business. It has taken us at least 18 months to get settled and organised but it is now all worth it. We live in a great area and have had nothing but help and encouragement from our Italian neighbours who are of course also very curious about these odd looking creatures!
We have been breeding alpacas for 10 years and our love of Italy and the wish to live in a better climate caused us to make the move. The alpacas are very happy here and I have a suntan so it's all worked out!
We run courses and train people in alpaca breeding and we also breed some lovely alpacas some of which we sell.
Very little English is spoken here in Basilicata (we are 200 Km south of Naples) and there are only a handlful of Brits here but we have some italian and its amazing how good my drawing and sign language has become. Most awkward situations can be resolved with one or the other and a good dictionary!
Our story is written up quarterly in Alpaca World magazine and our website also has pages in Italian. www.zarza-alpacas.com
