Does anyone know if it is possible to use English appliances eg fridge freezer, washing machine, in Abruzzo? We have heard that some domestic supplies will not take it.

Yes, as electrical appliances in the EU are of a standardised nature. The only thing you might need to change is the connection plug head of your appliances, depending on whether you will have an earthed plug or a normal unearthed one.
