Pour one cup of 150 proof alcohol into a jar, shave the zest off of 6 fresh lemons and add the zest to the jar of alcohol, store in a container for approx 3 weeks. After three weeks, take the jar of alcohol and zest,...... admire your new creation. Then boil one and one half cups of water in a saucepan, bring to boil, then pour in 1 cup of granulated sugar into the boiling water...watch it dissolve completely. Then drain the alcohol into a strainer removing the zest, pour the zest flavored alcohol into a quart bottle, pour the water and dissoved sugar into the same bottle.
Put in the ice box....wait a few hours while it chills and "mama mia" you have Aunt Julia's Limoncello! Eat your heart out Danny Divito!

Hi Mike!!! Going to buy a bottle of alcohol on my next trip to Italy, just to make your 'Zia Julia' Limoncello!!, do you know if you can buy it here in the UK??, and does it have to be 150 proof?? I have often bought a bottle back, for my parents, who like to make there own flavoured spirit, or just put it in there coffee. Many thanks!!!

When I was in Venice, I tried something which I think was called meloncello - or at least it was a melon liqueur, and it was delicious! Very smooth and flavoursome. Does anyone know if you can buy it here in the UK?

Hi Daisydaze
I've looked for meloncello in the UK before and haven't been able to find it anywhere. I wouldn't mind trying to make it myself but wouldn't know where to start... I am using this as a good excuse for a trip back to Italy to stock up!
PS Thanks for the limoncello recipe, Mikes Munchies. I would love to try making it.
