after being near the epicentre of the quake that hit the uk I am wary of buying property in the south of italy --they had a bad one with deaths in 1980 near Naples

We have a house in the Assisi area which was hit very badly in 1997. We bought it 18 months ago. I would recommend you follow your Italian dream - we found that the earthquake brought our small community together. Many had to live in containers! Our next door neighbour slept several weeks in their Fiat 500! With regard to insurance - ours excludes earthquake cover, but we decided to take the risk. If it happens again - our bonds will be even stronger.

It is a fear, especially with things like septic tanks and the language barrier! Thats not something you want to be hit by an earthquake! but surely living the dream is worth the risk at the end of the day

So much of Italy is susceptibly to earthquakes, if you imagine a line running down through the centre of Italy then most of it has has earthquake hot spots. I would indeed follow your dream, southern Italy is a fantastic place, to me it is the authentic Italy, a little more rustic but full of heart and beauty. I believe that there is an insurance company based in Scotland that does insure against earthquakes. I am afraid that I have forgotten the name .
