Visited Udine this July after many years and discovered a lovely restaurant the Vitello D'oro in the centre right next to the beautiful old fish market building. Wonderful food and great wine selection. Highly recommend it.Had forgotten how beautiful the area around was. Took a drive around the area where there were vineyards and beautiful private homes.Took home some Tocai. All the local produce shops were more than helpful to help when I described what I liked. Came home with carefully packed wine in my suitcase and said a prayer that it would survive the flight! It did and I am enjoying the fruits of the vine now.Highly recommend a stop off if touring. There are lovely hotels especially the Clocchiatti which has a pool. The area of Buttrio just outside had a clock tower that was back to front and a fabulous restaurant called il Parco with the best beef ever! We were lucky to be there when there was a wedding. Lovely atmosphere. visited Cividale and a picturesque "devil's bridge".Go Visit!

Hi Marilyn I love your account of Udine - it sounds incredible. Never been before but would definitely consider it, especially as I am planning a little tour of the country next year (by train!) to try and take in some of the places in Italy that I haven't yet been to. Do you think it would be possible to see much of the area around here without a car? If I am just using public transport it sounds like it might be tricky to see the lovely countryside in the same way you did. Let me know what you think! Thanks.
