Does anyone know how an opera singer from New Zealand can get work singing in Italy?
dont know ---i want to move and teach the piano there and am from the uk---we could set up a music acadamy together perhaps as I also accompany singers on the piano and i cannot move to italy without an income
wow, that sounds like a good idea. Do you accompany opera singers? where were you thinking of going in Italy? M
What a wonderful job, my one concern is do you speak Italian at a reasonable level? If you want to work with Italians then they will expect you to be able to converse in Italian. If you are not involved in the tourist industry then unfortunately not many Italians speak English. It is also difficult to get an employment contract so therefore your idea of starting your own business is worth investigating. My one piece of advice is to be as flexible as possible with any potential job offers. Good luck.
thanks for yr advice. Do you live in sardinia Sally? I do speak reasonable Italian...just needs a brush up. I have spent a few months living in Rome previously. But wouldn`t it be equally as difficult to set up a business as get work singing?
Hi there, yes I live up in the north west of Sardinia, near Alghero. I've been here now for around a year and a half doing a little bit of everything. The one thing that I am finding that it can be very frustrating working for others, so I've just set up my own business in property (I was in estate agency in England for around 20 years) its still early days. You can register as a sole trader or as self employed. You need to look at what would be best for your own circumstances, if you want to trade as an individual for example.
I'm getting there with the lanuage although I have good days and bad days. I'm at the horrible intermediate stage, which means I start off fine but as the conversation gets faster and especially in groups I can lose the thread but I get there. If you've lived in Rome I imagine you will be back to speed in no time. I'm looking forward to hearing the next episode of your story.
I decided before coming here that I would never get work in Italy if I didn't live here and make the commitment to changing my life, It can be tough sometimes but I believe its the things that you don't do, that end up being the ones that you regret. Best wishes, Sally
